The CAR-15 has a shorter barrel; 10"-11.5" compared to 14.5" on the M4.

I don't think the original CAR-15 had a forward assist. Both guns had collapsing buttstocks.

CAR-15 barrel is light contour overall, and doesn't have the step cut for the underbarrel grenade launcher. M4 barrel is larger diameter past the gas block and can accept the grenade launcher.

CAR-15 has the original A1 style sights integrated into the carry handle. M4 has the A2 style long range dual aperture sights.

They have different types of flash suppressors. CAR-15 has the long style found on the 11.5" barrels, M4 has a standard A2 style flash suppressor.

I don't think the original CAR-15 had a brass deflector.

That's about all I can think of. Not many big differences, just a bunch of little ones.

CAR stands for Colt Automatic Rifle - and Wodasini is correct. I have an SP-1 civilian version, no forward assist, no brass deflector. Also it does not have a "stepped" barrel it was simply a light weight one and a 2 position colapsable stock. SN/
