whats needed

Recommended Posts

I plan on purchasing a completely stripped AR kit....

I have already put together a kit from Model 1 sales, where the upper was already assembled.

but with this new kit it is completely unassembled. my qustion is what tools or parts will I need to put this kit together.

and how difficult is it to put a barrel on an upper.

thanks

If you are going to do this project, please take some snapshots as you go along. I am sure many would benefit from your work.

If you need a full set of headspace gauges in .223 (go, no-go, field) I can send some to you. As usual, it will probably take awhile. I would have to dig them out. Most of my gun room stuff has been boxed.

Out of curiosity... Are you considering building from one of the SARCO kits?

The barrel wrench and a vise fixture for holding the upper will be a must. I can help you with the gauges to check your work. Barreling an action is not rocket science, but a good amount of paranoia couldn't hurt. I have not done an AR-15, but have done other models of firearms.

What are you thinking about doing?

LOL. How did I know. cool.gif

I have looked at them as well, but could not justify the expense of the extra tooling required. After you factor in the cost of tools, you start to approach the price of an already assembled and headspaced upper.

If I loan you the gauges, maybe one day you could let me borrow your AR barreling tools biggrin.gif

Keep me posted.

AR-15.com has a build your own section with just about everything you need to know. Look for a while and you will find different ideas on headspace. Seems some do and some don't! I got mine already put together ( upper) for an extra $15. Just the shipping for the tools would be more than that!
