Ok, i know some of the users here don't even own too many guns, but how do you secure your collection. Even if your collection is knives, swords, axes, rifles, pistols, shotguns, candy bars, or zombie control devices :sneaky2: . last year i upgraded from two security cabinets to an actual firesafe and a pistol cabinet. now obviously i keep certain provisions readily at hand, but i still protect my collection, pleas post pics and even a description if you like.
I wont laugh even if you have a bank vault for your airsoft.....well maybe a little

ps the wall works for half of my edged toys, and the spider i found taking pictures and figured id hire him as a guard

Theft.

I have this one nightmare that occurs every now and then. It is always the same, I come home and the police are at my door. Some kids broke into my house and got a hold of whatever and shot some people. I have had it a few times.

Needless to say I have done a reasonable amount of security measures to prevent this. Unless the kids are good at using an Oxy-Acetylene or Plasma torchs they are going to have some trouble. And lets just hope the heat doesn't set off the ammo (I have an extensive metals background and have thought it out )

But you know what is the best barrier for theft? Making the rifles inoperable. Removing the bolts and storing them at a different location other than the one you are in. Its tough to use or sell a rifle with no bolt. Safety deposit boxes do work well for these. Obviously it does not mesh well in a SHTF fantasy scenario but it is practical.

Personally I think you only need to have one "home defense firearm" on the ready (well...maybe two). Anything else is asking for trouble.

I photo document my collection. Do you know why? Insurance. Should there ever be a problem, I can prove what I had to an insurance agent, who is required to replace items of equivalent value. I have wrote about this on a different thread on discussing "Posting pictures on the Forum".

I would suggest that anyone who has a collection or even one or two firearms to make copies of the serial number and other data regarding the firearm. SHould there be any "trouble" you have the information which can help you get it returned if possible, or help keep you out of any trouble.

Insurance. Firearms are things. Lets face it. They are material possessions, that (hopefully) can always be replaced. Should something happen you can have your investment covered.

On a side note, If anyone ever gets a Curios & Relics Type 03 FFL, it is actually a Federal Crime for anyone to break into your home and even attempt to steal your firearms. In addition to State and Local Laws. The BATF also investigates the matter. I found this interesting. When you get your license they give you some neat signs to post stating that.

So I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject. I understand why people are reluctant to show pictures or discuss in details what they own. I respect privacy. The flip side is that pictures help in descriptions as well as providing detailed ideas to give a frame of reference to a conversation. I suppose that it comes down to the risks one is willing to take. It is possible to track anyone down who posts on the web. I am not blind to this. Fortunately I set up a scenario where if I was to have a break in or robbery it would not me the end of things.

If you have a smaller rifle and pistol collection (say 16-40 rifles) and you are worried about safety this is a great solution.

Knaack Construction Job Boxes

These are storage chests for tools and equipment for construction sites.

Posted Image

I was working as a pipe fitter/welder on a construction site in Texas. We used a crane to get our tools up to the 5th floor where we were working. The Elevators were not installed in the building so we figured that our stuff was safe. The Boxes were filled with at least 1500lbs of tools and equipment. We joked about people have to drag them down stairs to steal them.

Well one weekend some burglars came to the jobsite. Istead of trying to break into the boxes, they just pushed them off the side of the building. So my tools and equipment went down 5 stories (50-60ft) and were smashed. There were other kinds of job boxes there that smashed open, but my Knaack Box stayed shut!!!. Most of the stuff inside was ruined though.

Well, for security for rifles it works prety well. When empty they are easy to move in a house. Often the doors of a house require it to be tipped on end. Once in your house andd filled with rifles and ammo (Plus a few concrete anchors or bolts :D ) it becomes pretty secure. There are no racks in it but they are easily made. What it works great for are rifles in carry cases and in boxes.

You can buy "generic" brands of these storage boxes at Lowes or Home Depot for Under $200. The Knack boxes cost around $350-450. I like them because you can fit alot in them and they are reasonably secure.

What is nice is that you can throw a table cloth or other mat on top of it and use the top as a work table in your gunroom.

Just a low cost idea.

You know those 8 gun steel gun cases you see at K-Mart or WalMart for $80-100? You are better of spending twice that and getting the Generic Construction Box from Lowes. I think its called "JobBox".

im not sure if its just a localities thing or what but around here they are also referred to as gangboxes, not gangbanger but gang and i dont know why, but thed is right the little league my dad and i umpired for kept the equipment in these behind the backstops of each field and ppl tried to break in and steal them, but they were welded and cemented in place and no one ever got in ps they also used good chains and great locks

Actually, if you make a base for it out of some 2x6 lumber, and then drill and screw it to one end of the Job Box, it would work. The stand would just have to be slightly smaller than the base/side of the job box, and not be touching the lid.

You would also need to connect it to the wall as well.

I have looked into retrofitting some of mine into vertical lockers. The biggest drawback would be to reach the combination lock on the top. You could use key locks instead.

Knack boxes are great idea. They dropped one, full of tools off the back of a truck at work and it got banged and dented but did not open. The shop foreman decided it was too damaged to put out on a job so I offered to take it home and get it out of his way. An hour of banging on it and I had everything working on it.
It's not gangbox style it opens from the front and has shelves on one side drawers on the other. I don't keep guns in it but it works great for ammo and reloading supplies.

I think its a great idea. I have way too many guns to fit into a "stackon" type safe and a regular safe or at least a safe door is well over $1000.00 which I dont have. (new C&R = no extra money).
but I do need to do something so I dont have guns hidden all over the house and also I expect to get back the ones that were stolen "someday"

I have my guns locked up...taking the bolts out is a great idea though.
The Derringer is by my bed, but good luck to anyone who can hit ANYTHING with that

I don't have a safe, I can't put one in the apartment here...so knack box here I come! I'm planning on moving to a small house sometime soon, and I will have my safe soon enough.

One thing about serial numbers - don't put them in your wallet. That is NOT a safe place to put them. Don't keep them with the guns, keep it somewhere separate. And keep another copy. and another copy.

Couldn't even fit a damn safe in this apartment....

gun safes are great, no doubt. But I hide mine because if a theif knows where you store your firearms he may just come back and have a crack at your safe. If they are hidden then less time to snoop around before the security alarm goes off. Either way is good.

Or maybe just a safe and a locker for the ammo. I like the monkeys better though.

I have 2 shitshus, and 1 chow chow dog to protect my gun.

Since I only have 1 firearm, I carry it with me everyday, the rest are all airsofts, and air riffle.

But if I'm out of the country that prohibits me from carrying it, I would bring it to any certified gun stores that store firearms for customers, free of charge. If anything shall happen to it, they'll be responsible.

love the chow-chow. they don't adapt well to the philippines though.

heck. at work all i use for gun storage is a steel filing cabinet with a big-ass lock. with all the sentries and the fact that we're based in a secure area with very limited access it's a lot more secure than a bank.

Gun theft is big in this area. I have a cheap wally world safe with a few cheap guns in it. The rest are in places that I had built in when I built my house. Not even my wife knows were most are, only one best friend.

If you think about it when you build, you can put in fake walls, ect. Now you could find them with a bulldozer.. cool.gif

Guns are in the closet. I've been meaning to put a lock on it and I probably will when I get back. The house is "protected" by a big harmless german shephard/husky (my roommates).

My AR15 hangs about 7 feet off the floor in my living room and I keep a full 20rd mag behind some photos on the entertainment center. It's out of sight from the windows although that doesn't matter too much I suppose because we never open the windows in the living room. I keep a bayonet mounted on it for S&G's. I suppose part of me hopes that if someone is too close for me to shoot that I can use rifle fighting on them. ("The guy lunged for my rifle so I buttstroked him and stuck him on the bayonet")

In my room I keep my BHP cocked and locked in a desk drawer within reach of my bed. When I get back I'm planning on picking up a HK USP compact .45acp so the BHP will probably get retired to the closet.

My thinking exactly. If and when I build the dream house, I am planning on putting in a few of those secret places to store valuables and weapons. This would go nicely in the topic - what if the democrats took away our guns.

I'd like to see a few "examples" of what you did some time to get some ideas on how to go about it my self. I am pretty handy with some tools (the wife and I have almost completely renovated our 70 year old house.) so I might be able to do some retrofits in the current dwelling. If you have any that aren't too revealing, I would love to see them.

With a lil work, most closets or other rooms(use your thinking cap) can be shortened with a fake wall. A two ft. space will hold a lot of ammo or guns. If you use a space under the floor, use a small door and cover it with the frig. There are a lot of ways to hid things in plain view. Just remember, the person you show will tell 10 other people.

My wife gave me a Christmas present last night, so now they are stored in a locked safe so the kids cannot get to them. All except one which I carry on me and leave in the drawer when I go to bed so I have something to get me to the safe to get the rest.
