Theft.
I have this one nightmare that occurs every now and then. It is always the same, I come home and the police are at my door. Some kids broke into my house and got a hold of whatever and shot some people. I have had it a few times.
Needless to say I have done a reasonable amount of security measures to prevent this. Unless the kids are good at using an Oxy-Acetylene or Plasma torchs they are going to have some trouble. And lets just hope the heat doesn't set off the ammo (I have an extensive metals background and have thought it out )
But you know what is the best barrier for theft? Making the rifles inoperable. Removing the bolts and storing them at a different location other than the one you are in. Its tough to use or sell a rifle with no bolt. Safety deposit boxes do work well for these. Obviously it does not mesh well in a SHTF fantasy scenario but it is practical.
Personally I think you only need to have one "home defense firearm" on the ready (well...maybe two). Anything else is asking for trouble.
I photo document my collection. Do you know why? Insurance. Should there ever be a problem, I can prove what I had to an insurance agent, who is required to replace items of equivalent value. I have wrote about this on a different thread on discussing "Posting pictures on the Forum".
I would suggest that anyone who has a collection or even one or two firearms to make copies of the serial number and other data regarding the firearm. SHould there be any "trouble" you have the information which can help you get it returned if possible, or help keep you out of any trouble.
Insurance. Firearms are things. Lets face it. They are material possessions, that (hopefully) can always be replaced. Should something happen you can have your investment covered.
On a side note, If anyone ever gets a Curios & Relics Type 03 FFL, it is actually a Federal Crime for anyone to break into your home and even attempt to steal your firearms. In addition to State and Local Laws. The BATF also investigates the matter. I found this interesting. When you get your license they give you some neat signs to post stating that.
So I would love to hear your thoughts on the subject. I understand why people are reluctant to show pictures or discuss in details what they own. I respect privacy. The flip side is that pictures help in descriptions as well as providing detailed ideas to give a frame of reference to a conversation. I suppose that it comes down to the risks one is willing to take. It is possible to track anyone down who posts on the web. I am not blind to this. Fortunately I set up a scenario where if I was to have a break in or robbery it would not me the end of things.
If you have a smaller rifle and pistol collection (say 16-40 rifles) and you are worried about safety this is a great solution.
Knaack Construction Job Boxes
These are storage chests for tools and equipment for construction sites.
I was working as a pipe fitter/welder on a construction site in Texas. We used a crane to get our tools up to the 5th floor where we were working. The Elevators were not installed in the building so we figured that our stuff was safe. The Boxes were filled with at least 1500lbs of tools and equipment. We joked about people have to drag them down stairs to steal them.
Well one weekend some burglars came to the jobsite. Istead of trying to break into the boxes, they just pushed them off the side of the building. So my tools and equipment went down 5 stories (50-60ft) and were smashed. There were other kinds of job boxes there that smashed open, but my Knaack Box stayed shut!!!. Most of the stuff inside was ruined though.
Well, for security for rifles it works prety well. When empty they are easy to move in a house. Often the doors of a house require it to be tipped on end. Once in your house andd filled with rifles and ammo (Plus a few concrete anchors or bolts :D ) it becomes pretty secure. There are no racks in it but they are easily made. What it works great for are rifles in carry cases and in boxes.
You can buy "generic" brands of these storage boxes at Lowes or Home Depot for Under $200. The Knack boxes cost around $350-450. I like them because you can fit alot in them and they are reasonably secure.
What is nice is that you can throw a table cloth or other mat on top of it and use the top as a work table in your gunroom.
Just a low cost idea.
You know those 8 gun steel gun cases you see at K-Mart or WalMart for $80-100? You are better of spending twice that and getting the Generic Construction Box from Lowes. I think its called "JobBox".
