I am considering purchasing a M14 from Springfield, however I have heard rumors of the receivers cracking after about 1000 rounds. Has anyone else heard this? Does this seem feasible?

Rubbish!

A local friend has made his book available FREE. See if this doesn't answer your questions. His Springfield collection is UNBELIEVEABLE and it includes a factory full auto M1A. I've even got a photo or two published in this great book.

Thanks. I'm shopping for an M1A. Have a huge gun show in Chantilly, Northern Virginia in July. Hope I can find a solid piece at a reasonable price.
