8mm Mauser vs 7.62x54

Out of the 8mm and 7.62x54, which round packs the most punch and has the flatter trajectory? I was thinking of gettting a hunting riflle and cant decide between the Mosin Nagant (7.62x54) of the Mauser (8mm). I would be using the rifle to hunt white tail.

8mm Mauser = 7.9x57 (197 grain round)

compared to 7.62x54 (147/187 grn)?

8mm is probably overkill for white tail.

Both are great rounds, with great rifles to shoot them from. The Mauser has a world famous action that is still used by riflemakers because of its strength and reliability, and world-class accuracy, and Mosins don't seem to have any problem on either count. The Mauser may have slightly better punch depending on the round you fire but neither one will have any problem hunting.

Both rounds fall roughly into the .30-06/.308 class of cartridges for power and accuracy (in good rifles), and are suitable for the same class of game animals.
